The Zukeen Diaries, Vol. I
Truth be told, making a magazine is a long, emotionally draining ordeal.
It’s a resignation of sanity, a dignified loss of your marbles, a return trip to the loony bin. During Issue 1, we took regular trips to small, seaside caves in the Catlins to weep in solitude.
The elation only just outweighs the frustration. After everything, the blood, the sweat, the tears, there’s something too joyous about it all, the paper and ink, the physicality. Like childbirth? We can only assume so.
So, let us not delay, Issue 3 is on the way! The third coming of Hello Zukeen is somewhere not too far away. We don’t know when, but it’s in the works.
So without further adieu, we’re pleased to announce that we’ll be keeping a diary (blog?) of our progress on the magazine. A behind the scenes if you will, an unadulterated lens into all the nonsense that goes into making this silly thing, replete with waves, artists, humour and tantrums.
They say novelists should diarise their progress when they write a novel. We hear it’s a good marketing strategy. That it is. We look forward to documenting this rigmarole for you larrikins. But for us, perhaps more importantly, it’s a tether to mental stability. We pray that it will lend a little perspective and ease the torment of the whole process.
So here’s an update; after severe bouts of the Winter blues (more on this at a later date) the kind people at HZ are all in stellar health. Hoffman is still missing, but that’s a story for another day. Interviews have been recorded and photographs have been taken. The bits and pieces of Issue 3 are very slowly coming together. We can’t glean too much more, because the internet in Dunedin is about to be turned off for the day, but for now, here’s a few photos of the journey of so far. Stay tuned.
